Exploratory Searchery

by Daniel Stuelpnagel

Introduction

In June of 2007, at our Baltimore studio, Bart O’Reilly and I developed an exhibition entitled " Materializing The Story ".

The curatorial vision and our paintings developed since the early part of the year coalesced around the concept of iteration through process and materials, and the subtle narratives implied by our abstract landscapes, each group of paintings in their own way integrating an aesthetic influenced by digital technology.

This coincided with the completion of my four hundredth painting on canvas, and several other approaching benchmarks; ten years as a professional artist, and almost fifty exhibitions during that time.  In the mysterious way of art, this exhibition became the catalyst for me to materialize my story.

This is a personal account of my successful pursuit of a professional art and painting career spanning more than ten years; at the time of this writing, I have been painting for more than twenty years altogether, since beginning study under Herb Jackson at Davidson College in North Carolina.

After selling a collection of fourteen of my paintings in 2006, for more than forty thousand dollars, I realized that, looking back on this emerging career (during which time I had met and observed the work of hundreds of other artists), I had an astounding story to tell.

Following the turn of the millennium, the world has changed, and the art world has been (once again) completely transformed.  So telling this story in words has finally become as important to me as translating it through visual metaphor in paintings.

I hope it will be meaningful and entertaining for you.  All of this and more is explained in the pages that follow.

I wish to offer very special thanks to my family, for their enthusiasm, support and good-natured critique; my friends, many of them artists with whom I have had the pleasure to collaborate; my collectors, whose direct connections and support will be with me all my life; my galleries, agents and dealers, who have moved mountains and made room for me in a crowded field; my former co-workers and teachers, who probably had to put up with the most frustrated versions of me; the international community, including so many vibrant souls who have appeared in each of the various cities where I have lived and worked; and special thanks to K8 Z., for showing me the way, with music and love.
